Scripps Networks Interactive CEO Ken Lowe to Keynote CRS 2011

Scripps Networks Interactive CEO Ken Lowe to Keynote CRS 2011

Innovation, interaction and accountability in media among hot-button issues

(Nashville, Tenn. – Oct. 25, 2010)  Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.® has announced Scripps Networks Interactive Chief Executive Officer Ken Lowe as the keynote speaker for Country Radio Seminar 2011, to be held March 2-4, 2011.

Since 2008 Lowe has served as president, chairman and CEO of lifestyle media group Scripps Networks Interactive. The company comprises globally recognized brands Great American Country (GAC), HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Travel Channel and Cooking Channel.

Lowe’s media career includes more than a decade’s worth of management experience in the radio industry.  He points to innovation, interaction and accountability as key factors in creating valuable opportunities in today’s media landscape. His background in radio helped prepare him for the transition to cable television, Lowe says.

“It’s no coincidence that a lot of folks who had a hand in the development of cable networks came out of radio,” says Lowe. “They had a better understanding of a more niche type of programming. Radio was truly that, whereas in broadcasting, so much of a local station's content came from the network.  Radio folks tended to be more hands-on and more promotion and marketing driven.”

Adds CRB Executive Director Bill Mayne, “Ken Lowe brings an amazing perspective on the innovation, leadership, product development, marketing, risk taking, and accountability it takes to build great companies in today's new media marketplace.”

Ken Lowe joined Scripps in 1980 as general manager of the company's radio properties. In 1988 he became vice president of programming, promotion and marketing for the company's nine network-affiliated television stations. He founded and launched HGTV in 1994; oversaw the acquisition and transformation of the Food Network; presided over the launches of DIY Network in 1999, Fine Living Network in 2002 and Cooking Channel in 2009; and the acquisitions of GAC in 2004 and the Travel Channel in 2009.  Lowe previously served as president and CEO of The E. W. Scripps Company from October 2000 to June 2008.

The CRS 2011 keynote address is sponsored by  Radio-info.com and kicks off the three-day seminar on Wednesday, March 2, at 9:30 a.m.  Past Country Radio Seminar keynote speakers have included money management expert Dave Ramsey, marketing guru Seth Godin, retired U.S. General Tommy Franks and recording artist Bon Jovi.

Digital Rodeo Stages Second Annual Wrap Party and Show to Close Out Country Radio Seminar

Digital Rodeo Stages Second Annual Wrap Party and Show to Close Out Country Radio Seminar

Cadillac Ranch to Host Festivities, “Guilty Pleasures” Show

Following the success of last year’s inaugural CRS 40th Anniversary Jam, DigitalRodeo.com has once again partnered with Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.® to stage a unique concert which will unofficially close out CRS 2010.

This year’s event, dubbed the Digital Rodeo Guilty Pleasures Show, will be held Friday, Feb. 26, at Cadillac Ranch in downtown Nashville.  The show is set to kick off at 10:30 p.m. or immediately following the CRS New Faces of Country Music® Show and Dinner at the Nashville Convention Center.

The “Guilty Pleasures” theme encourages artists to choose and perform cover versions of one of their favorite songs from any artist, across any genre of music.   Last year’s show featured performances from artists including Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Jimmy Wayne, Julianne Hough, James Otto, Jamie O’Neal, Justin Moore, Brady Seals and many more.   A selection of Nashville’s finest musicians will once again serve as the artists’ backing band.

“Last year’s event was such a huge success that we knew we had to do it again this year,” says Robert Reynolds, DigitalRodeo.com Director of Industry Relations.  “Every artist has a ‘guilty pleasure’ when it comes to music, and this is their opportunity to get up on stage and really cut loose and have some fun.  We’ve expanded the show so that artists can cover any song from any genre, so who knows what we’ll hear this year.  I do know it’s going to be a memorable night with more than a few surprises!”

Adds Sharon Allen, CRB Director of Sponsorship Sales, “The Digital Rodeo event at CRS really ends the seminar on a fun note.  There are very few opportunities for artists to get on stage and perform basically anything they want, so we received a lot of positive feedback last year from the artists in that respect.  And of course, the packed house got to see some of Nashville’s biggest names do something really unique.  It’s definitely one of the CRS live events that people are already talking about this year.”

Artists appearing at this year’s Digital Rodeo Guilty Pleasures Show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Educational Aspects of Country Radio Seminar Offer Attendees 360 Coverage, Extended Value

Educational Aspects of Country Radio Seminar Offer Attendees 360 Coverage, Extended Value

CRB, Inc.® Adds to List of Featured Panelists at CRS 2010

Country Radio Seminar 2010, to be held Feb. 24-26, 2010, has announced an updated list of educational panels and agenda items designed to empower CRS attendees in today’s uncertain economy.

The educational aspects of CRS 2010 provide the kind of invaluable information that can be used long after the three-day seminar has ended.  Starting with the Keynote Address from respected financial authority, Dave Ramsey, CRS 2010 is packed with expert speakers, comprehensive market research and current industry issues designed to educate attendees, regardless of market size or region. Panel topics will cover issues such as getting records played, finding jobs in today’s competitive environment, building revenue streams, avoiding PPM panic, expanding online opportunities and increasing new media effectiveness and profitability.

“There is always a lot of hype surrounding the big name superstars we have performing at CRS events, so sometimes the education aspect of the seminar is overshadowed,” says CRB President Becky Brenner.  “The truth is that the panels, guest speakers and networking opportunities help you walk away with actionable ideas you can implement immediately that will help you succeed.  The Agenda committee works hard to bring you the topics that are most relevant to our industry and the people who you need to build relationships with, particularly when times are tough.”

Newly added panels to the CRS 2010 agenda include: The Radiothon Effect: The Reality of Radiothons (moderated by Lon Helton), The Big Idea: How to Come Up with Long-term Creative Ideas that Sell in a Tough Economy (moderated by Paul Weyland) and Town Hall: The Industry Truth Revealed (moderated by Tony Randall and Kris Rochester with panelists Mike Dungan, John Esposito, Scott Lindy, Larry Wilson and Gretchen Wilson).

Along with previously announced Keynote speaker Dave Ramsey and bestselling author Bob Rosner’s Workplace 911 panel, other can’t-miss educational items include:

CMA’s Prime Prospects Research Presentation and CMA Research Workshop

Label Partnerships  (Skip Bishop and Steve Hodges)

So You Think You Know How to Interview? You’re Wrong! (Craig Morgan, Blair Garner, Garret Doll, Sharla McCoy and Rick “Bubba” Taylor)

Newly Redesigned CRS 41 Agenda Released by Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.

Newly Redesigned CRS 41 Agenda Released by Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.

Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. has released additional details of their newly redesigned agenda for next year's Country Radio Seminar 41, to be held Feb. 24-26, 2010, at the Convention Center in downtown Nashville, Tenn.
One of the biggest changes is the revised scheduling of panels, which now allows registrants to attend more events without missing conflicting agenda activities. The new lineup ensures that no more than three panels are held simultaneously during the three-day seminar.
Additionally, the designation of market-specific panels has been eliminated. The focus of all CRS 41 activities has been reassessed and updated to appeal to all music industry attendees, regardless of market size or location. The single day Sales panels have been redistributed throughout the three days of the seminar as well.
"We have worked hard to implement some fundamental changes to CRS that we hope will lay the groundwork for continued improvements in the future," says CRB Agenda Chair John Paul. "We have listened to the feedback and suggestions we've received on how to improve CRS, and it is our goal to make sure Country Radio Seminar offers the most relevant and useful information possible to our attendees so that it can be used immediately to their benefit."
The Artist/Attendee Welcome Reception and the Consumer Focus Group are two events returning to CRS 41 that have not been presented at the seminar in recent years.
"The Artist/Attendee reception is an event that we are excited to bring back to Country Radio Seminar for the first time in quite a few years. We feel like this is a great opportunity for artists to mix with the radio professionals at CRS in a relaxed, informal environment where everyone gets a chance to just hang out and get away from the 'business' part of the seminar for a while," says CRB President Becky Brenner.
The focus group will include panelists of all ages from a variety of regional Country radio markets, marking the first time a live focus group has been held at Country Radio Seminar since CRS 35.
A day-by-day breakdown of the 22 panels and other CRS 41 agenda items follows.
Wednesday, Feb. 24:
CRS 41 officially begins on Wednesday with the Keynote Address, delivered this year by financial authority Dave Ramsey. The Humanitarian Awards Presentation, UMG's Lunch and Showcase Performance, the opening of the exhibition hall, songwriter showcase KCRS Live!, and the return of the Artist/Attendee Welcome Reception are all featured non-panel agenda items on Wednesday. The ACM sponsored Music City Jam(tm) closes the evening with a performance from superstar Taylor Swift.
Wednesday Panels: Normal People: From the Mouths of the Consumer; Label Partnership: How to Achieve the Results You Want for Your Station; Workplace 911 (featuring Bob Rosner).
Thursday, Feb. 25:
Thursday's agenda features a number of panels previously identified as "Track" panels. One of the day's highlights is the CMA research presentation, which provides results from the CMA's recently completed Prime Prospects Study and Annual Tracking Study. A follow-up workshop is held after lunch, offering in-depth analysis of the study's findings. Sony Music Entertainment sponsors Thursday's luncheon and performance, and WCRS Live! is sponsored by BMI. Thursday Panels: So You Think You Know How to do an Artist Interview? You're Wrong!; How to Increase Station Revenue and Your Commission; The Great Playlist Debate: Can Passive be Passionate?; 360 Experience: Grab and Hold Those Listeners and Eyeballs From AM to PM; Automotive Advertising: A Car Dealer Tells All; CMA Research Presentation; CMA Music Research - How You Can Use It.
Friday, Feb. 26:
Friday kicks off with the Power Breakfast (formerly the Manager's Breakfast), followed by a full day of panels. An additional Hot Topic panel will be announced in January. Capitol sponsors Friday's luncheon and performance, and the afternoon Town Hall session wraps up the seminar's schedule of panels. The popular New Faces of Country Music(r) show and dinner officially closes CRS 41. Performers for this event will be announced in early December. Friday Panels: Zero Promotional Budget = Doing More with Nothing, PPM Affects Every Facet of our Industry and This Means You; Small Market Programming Solutions for When the Chips are Down; The Gloves are Off: Arbitron vs. Nielsen; Let's Hear if for the Brands and Industry Trends; Size Doesn't Matter: Don't Let Your Market or Label Size Determine Your Success Online; Radio Stars: Talent Coaching and Development for all Day-Parts; 50 Great Ideas in 50 Minutes.

Popular Focus Group Panel to Return at CRS 41

Popular Focus Group Panel to Return at CRS 41

Consumers Reveal Candid Thoughts on Country Radio and Music Industry in Live Panel
Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.® has announced the return of its popular consumer focus group panel as part of the revitalized CRS agenda at Country Radio Seminar® 41, to be held Feb. 24-26, 2010.
“Normal People: From the Mouths of the Consumer,” will be held Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. CST. The live focus group provides a candid glimpse into the minds and opinions of the Country music consumer, from teenage high school students to career-oriented professionals.
“Sometimes it just makes sense to step back and ask the people that listen to the music and buy the records exactly what’s on their mind,” says panel moderator and WUBL MD Lance Houston. “At the same time, maybe some of the panelists aren’t buying the records and aren’t listening to the radio, and we want to know why that is, too.”
Panelists will represent a generous cross-section of regional Country radio markets of varying sizes. This marks the first time a live focus group has been held at Country Radio Seminar since CRS 35.
“It’s been several years since we’ve had a focus group at CRS, and keeping in the spirit of our agenda facelift, we thought this panel would really add some value to the Country Radio Seminar experience. I expect this to be one of the highlights of CRS 41,” adds CRS Agenda Chairman John Paul.

"Workplace 911" Another Can't-Miss Panel at CRS 41

"Workplace 911" Another Can't-Miss Panel at CRS 41

Best-Selling Author Bob Rosner Offers Timely Advice for Survival in Tough Times.

Best-selling business author and award-winning journalist, Bob Rosner, will host the Workplace 911 panel at Country Radio Seminar® 41, to be held Feb. 24-26, 2010, in downtown Nashville, Tenn.
Rosner, known as "Dilbert with a solution," is the author of The Wall Street Journal best-seller, "The Boss's Survival Guide," as well as a regular contributor on the "Today" show and CNBC. The WorkPlace 911 panel will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 2:30 p.m., and according to Rosner, will offer CRS attendees valuable advice on "how to create a saner and more productive workplace, how to break through the masses to actually get hired, how to survive layoffs and restructuring and how to be the kind of boss people actually want to work for," among other topics.
"Our Workplace 911 panel is particularly relevant to our attendees this year. Unfortunately, there are an unusually large number of qualified individuals competing for jobs in this industry right now, and whether you're currently employed or not, Bob Rosner's practical advice and insight couldn't come at a more opportune time," says CRB Executive Director Ed Salamon.
For the last 14 years, Rosner has co-authored the internationally syndicated column "WorkPlace911," (formerly "Working Wounded: Advice That Adds Insight to Injury") appearing in publications such as the Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News and online at ABCnews.com. He has been a featured contributor for People, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Newsweek, Reader's Digest, Playboy and on "Good Morning America" and "60 Minutes," among others. Rosner has delivered keynote speeches in 48 of the 50 United States, as well as Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and the Philippines.
"Radio can play a key role in helping people survive these tough times. This is a win-win situation; it's good for the industry and good for the radio audience," says Rosner.
Rosner's appearance at CRS 41 follows in the seminar's recent tradition of booking prominent speakers to address and empower attendees in the face of a difficult economy, including marketing guru Seth Godin (keynote speaker at CRS 40) and money management expert (Dave Ramsey, keynote speaker at CRS 41).

CRS 41 Agenda Sneak Preview

CRS 41 Agenda Sneak Preview

New Agenda Streamlined, More Accommodating for All Radio Markets, Music Industry Attendees
Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.® has overhauled and streamlined the agenda for Country Radio Seminar® 41, to be held Feb. 24-26, 2010, at the Nashville Convention Center.
There are several changes to the CRS 41 agenda. This year's topics stress relevant and usable information that can be applied in all radio station markets, regardless of size. In the past, panels were tailored to small, medium or large markets; this year each panel will apply to all market sizes and the music industry as well. The single day Sales panels have been redistributed this year throughout the three days of the seminar. Additionally, no more than three panels are being held simultaneously at any time during CRS 41.
"We listened to many of the suggestions we received after last year's CRS, and one of the most popular requests we had was that there were so many panels to attend, it was hard to choose which ones to go to," says KUPL's John Paul, CRB Agenda Chair. "So, this year we made a conscious effort to reassess our agenda and structure it in such a way that would allow attendees to see more of the panels."
Country Radio Seminar provides valuable opportunities for attendees to engage and network with others in their field, enjoy musical performances from superstars and up-and-coming acts and attend dozens of panels and exhibits that address today's most relevant topics in a Country radio's rapidly changing industry.
A sneak peek at this year's agenda highlights follows:
Wednesday, Feb. 24: Wednesday features the anticipated, to-be-announced Keynote Speaker, followed by the Universal Music Group luncheon and label showcase, the songwriter event KCRS Live!, the return of the Artist/Attendee Welcome Reception and the popular Music City JamTM, hosted this year by Taylor Swift and sponsored by the Academy of Country Music. Notable panels on Wednesday include Bob Rosner's "Workplace 911" and "The Taylor Effect," a look at the marketing strategies that have been successful for modern superstar Taylor Swift.
Thursday, Feb. 25: Thursday's agenda consolidates many of the panels formerly identified as "Track" panels and implements more accessible information that can be used by all attendees. Examples include: "So You Think You Know How to Do An Artist Interview? You're Wrong!" "The Great Playlist Debate: Can Passive Be Passionate?" and a special research project. Other events during the day include Sony Music Entertainment's luncheon and showcase, BMI/Country Aircheck's WCRS Live! and a host of other informative discussion panels.
Friday, Feb. 26: Friday kicks off with the newly renamed Power Breakfast (formerly Manager's Breakfast), followed by the Capitol luncheon and showcase. Panels on Friday cover a broad range of interests, including sales, new media, promotions and a yet-to-be-named "Hot Topic" panel. Notable panels already confirmed include: "PPM Affects Every Facet of Our Industry, and This Means You!" "Arbitron vs. Nielsen" and "51 Great Promotional Ideas in 50 Minutes." CRS 41 closes with the highly anticipated New Faces of Country Music® Show and Dinner. Performers have yet to be announced.
A detailed schedule of CRS 41's Agenda and confirmed panelists can be viewed at the Country Radio Broadcasters website: www.CRB.org. CRB, Inc. reserves the right to modify or change the agenda as speakers and panelists are added or removed and topics are defined.

CRB, Inc. Announces Revisions to CRS-40 Wednesday Agenda

CRB, Inc. Announces Revisions to CRS-40 Wednesday Agenda

CRB, Inc. Announces Revisions to CRS-40
Wednesday Agenda

Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. has adjusted the Wednesday, March 4 agenda schedule at CRS-40 to allow for an earlier time slot for this year's keynote speaker, Seth Godin.

Events for the day kick off at 9 a.m. with the Opening Ceremonies and Award Presentation.  The keynote address will follow at 10 a.m. in the Performance Hall, with the Motivational Speaker/Life Coach panel at 11:15 a.m.  This year's speaker will be former No. 1 country artist Sylvia Hutton.

The existing morning Artist Radio Taping Session (sponsored by SESAC) will be combined with the afternoon A.R.T.S. panel.  As a result, the afternoon session will be extended by one hour (2:30 p.m. - 4:50 p.m.).

The Artist Radio Taping Sessions is one of the Country Radio Seminar highlights each year for attendees.  Top country artists, as well as emerging talent, will be available to record program liners and station IDs during the expanded taping session. Admission to A.R.T.S. is restricted to radio, networks, and syndicators only.

"Since CRS-40's keynote address was moved up earlier in the day, we felt like it was in the best interests of both the artists and our radio attendees to combine the two A.R.T.S. sessions this year," said CRB Executive Director Ed Salamon.  "This change provides artists with a more convenient time to participate and thereby increases the number and caliber of the artists available to radio attendees."

Additionally, Thursday's 40 Ingredients For A More Balanced Life panel has been moved to Wednesday at 4 p.m. as an option for those not attending the rescheduled Artist Radio Taping Session.

The keynote address was moved into the Performance Hall this year in anticipation of increased attendance to see speaker Seth Godin.  Godin, regarded as a master of marketing, has written several bestselling books on the subject, including "The Dip," "All Marketers are Liars," "Free Prize Inside," "Purple Cow" and "Meatball Sundae."  His most recent book, "Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us," quickly became a Top Ten bestseller on Amazon.com upon its release last October.

CRS-40 will be held March 4-6, 2009 at the Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.  An updated schedule of the agenda and confirmed panelists can be viewed at the CRB website: www.crb.org.  The regular rate of $699 expires Feb. 6.  On-site registration will be $749.

CRS 40 Agenda Released by CRB, Inc.

The Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.  Board and Agenda Committee have released this year's agenda for Country Radio Seminar 40, to be held March 4-6 at the Nashville Convention Center.

The unique theme of this year's event is the celebration of Country Radio Seminar's 40th anniversary.  Many of the exhibits and panel sessions will incorporate this theme into their topics as they reflect on the history of the country radio and music industry's most educational and uniquely motivational convention.

"It's a phenomenal accomplishment to think that CRS is celebrating its 40th anniversary," said WSIX Program Director and Agenda Chair Keith Kaufman.  "This event is by far the premier gathering in our industry, and our Agenda Committee has worked tirelessly to commemorate it.  I'd say Tim McGraw is proof of that!"
